Newbie with a few questions/rampage…help!
im a 26 yr old female who has sd for about two yrs now. i want to
know how many people of color there are on here with sd? i am latina
and i think the fact that i have melanin makes for some slight
differences in my skin and that of a caucasians’. for one i have
experienced loss of color on the spots where my sd is on my face and
elbows in particular. i have also found that some of the over the
counter lotions my dermatologist suggested simply didnt work for me,
but through the suggestions of people i knew with eczema who were also
of color they suggested shea butter and i found that pure shea butter
and lotions rich in shea butter really help. my dandruff is what
really bothers me i get to the point where i want to shave my head.
like right now for instance my scalp is irritating me, i have very
little flaking because i just finished my regimen of 2% pyrithione
zinc shampoo everyday, 2% selenium sulfide shampoo twice a week, and
kenalog spray twice day. it was suggested to me by many of my african
american friends that i start "greasing my scalp", which i did
previously do with a hair and scalp cream oil moisturizer which we’re
told, oil can make it worse, but i found that the oils really calmed
the dryness and itching down. but my dermatologist told me to try the
aforementioned regimen and not rub anything into my scalp, but it
feels so dry! and also i have naturally curly hair what can i put it
in my hair that will make it look nice and not frizz or lay flat in
this extremely hot and humid texas climate, suggestions, answers
anything!!
im not trying to leave any of the non-brown folks out of the
discussion please if you have any suggestions im open i just want to
know if any of my ponderings are valid as far as the melanin goes, or
is it just different with everyone???

One of the things I think everyone on this board would agree with is
that you try different things and you stick to the things that work.
Different things work for different people, depending on their skin
type and exactly what is causing their sebderm (which isn’t always
easy to determine). If a home remedy works better than what the
doctor suggested, tell your doctor and work with him to find a
treatment that works for you.
Many of us with sebderm find greasiness is a factor we need to
control, not encourage. My skin is very fair… so I was amazed to
talk to an African-American friend to learn her hair & skin regimen.
She doesn’t wash her hair every day because its too drying (which to
me is gross because my hair/scalp would get greasy) and actually adds
grease as you mentioned to prevent her scalp/hair from drying out.
This is difficult for me to imagine… if I did that I’d probably be
covered in pimples from grease clogging my pores, my hair, skin and
scalp would be disgustingly greasy and my sebderm would be out of
control!
As a Latina, it may be that your skin is somewhere in the middle…
so as I said, you have to do what works for you!
Good luck!
