First time treatments for mild SD ?

Hi,

I’ve had SD now for about 3 years and was diagnosed it by my doctor
2 years ago. He then prescribed me steroid hydrocortisone cream and
a moisturiser that I used for around 3 months until reading of the
dangerous side effects at which point I stopped.

Since then I have had slight success with ACVM However I’ve now got
to the stage where I need I want to better control my SD and am
therefore going to look to my dermatologist for suggestions.

I’ve been reading about SD on the internet and in books now for
around 2 years and frankly I’ve been swamped with information from
all angles that is basically inconclusive.

I’m therefore making this post for some recommendations on the types
of things I should be asking my Derm and the types of treatments I
should be looking at to control my SD. From what I’ve read topical
anti fungus seem to be the best way to go for long term use and
limited side effects. I believe I have only a mild case of SD where
I don’t really suffer from the flaking, only the blotchy inflamed
skin around my cheeks, I would therefore would like to start getting
it under control using fairly gentle and less severe treatments that
are usually reserved for severe SD.

What would peoples suggestions be as a starting ground, I’m thinking:

A good cleaner, maybe Ovace ?
Some kind of gentle anti fungal ?

Many thanks for any advice guys and gals

Yeah I’ve read that many a time and thats probably what scares me the
most, knowing that no matter I do its likely to get worse over time.
I’ll take a look into Plexion TS, what goups of drougs does it fall
under (e.g steriod, anti fungal etc).

ZNP bar is something thats also seems to get a lot of praise, perhaps
I should give this a go too ?

ZNP works pretty well for me… I would recommend it. It only costs
about $5 a bar (which lasts for months) so you’re not out much if it
    doesn’t work.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Jon, trying to find it in the UK isn’t easy
though, but finally think i’ve tracked some down through ebay. How
well does it work at reducing the redness ? as flakes aren’t really an
    issue for me.

Honestly, I’d say ZNP works better at removing flakes and reducing
greasiness. I’m also using Finacea (azelaic acid) for rosacea, which
works well at stopping "bumps" (papules, etc).

As for the redness… if you find something that works, please let me
    know!

thats disappointing, have you any experience with anti fungals Jon ?

  6. Paul George Says:

None of the antifungal creams I’ve used have been as effective as ZNP
(pyrithione zinc) which is itself an antifungal agent.

    Good luck!

    Antonio,

I’m not sure… there are probably plenty of them. I tried
ketoconazole and (I think) ciclopirox. That was a few years ago, I
know they have fluconazole and itraconazole now, which may work
better with fewer risks of side effects. Others here probably have
    more info.

I wonder if different creams work better on different fungi… can
they do a culture or something to determine exactly what they’re
    dealing with?

My SD has been pretty bad this week… must be the cold (it’s in
single digits in the Northeast this week.

    Jon
