Mold/Mildew/Dampness Effects on SD (Wendy)
Hi Again,
You talked in your last message about the winter
effects on SD. You mentioned mold or mildew, and said
something about how when it’s damp things don’t dry
out completely and that might effect our SD or explain
why it’s worse in winter. My question is this…. if
there were dampness in my home, let’s say carpeting
got wet in my bedroom, and took days to dry when it
was cold in the house and rainy outside. Is there any
possibility that combination of events in my living
environment could affect my SD and cause it to flare?
Any opinions on that from anyone? Thanks to all of
you who are helping me during this difficult time. Roxanne

My short answer to you is "YES". I think damp conditions contribute
to SD.
I’m not sure why, though… whether it’s an irritating effect of
mold/mildew, some kind of allergic thing, or maybe (most likely?)
simply that damp conditions are more favorable for fungal development
on our skin, which we know is a contributing factor to SD (if not the
actual cause).
Good luck!

Hello,
I am newly diagnosed with SD, but I had had it for the last few years
on and off. It started behind my ears for a while and then to my
eyelids. I had red/sometimes cracked eyelids for about 2 years, on
and off. It took me that long to go to the doctor because when I
would leave my home in rainy northern california, my eyelids would
heal and look normal. And within a few days they were normal. I
travel for work, so I was gone a lot of the time on and off. I
always just thought it was a reaction to something in my house, but
nothing to go to the doctor for since my eyelids were fine half the
time. When it spread to my chin this fall, I finally went to a
doctor, where I received the news about SD. I live on the coast and
the winters are very rainy. Its usually foggy a lot here, and there
is high mold contents from the year round vegetation. We use
dehumidifiers in the house regularly, but I alwasy wondered if the
mold and damness could have ahd an effect. I thought about it also,
since I could trace it to the house here in California. But I’m sure
there could be other contributing factors as well.
I also was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on processed sugars
and SD. I eat a lot of sweets and desserts and I know sugar is bad
for people, so I wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on that
correlation. Thanks!
