Understanding Nutrition and diet
These are the following deficiencies that are represented with an
eczema flareup: beta carotene, zinc, selenium, essential fatty acids
(omega-3, omega-6, omega-9, GLA), quercetin, vitamin C, D, & E. Fiber
and magnesium deficiencies are usually represented as well. The best
way to address these deficiencies is through whole food consumption.
Should you decide to supplement these deficiencies by other means
then *********my suggestion is that you limit it to a good whole food
multivitamin, daily fiber (from green vegetables), and omega-3 cod
liver oil etc.*********
The beta carotene, zinc and selenium boost the immune health. The
overactive response that the doctors categorize eczema sufferers as
having is not due to a healthy or strong immune system; but rather,
due to an out of balance/unhealthy immune system. As a result of the
immune systems weaknesses it becomes overwhelmed by toxins that your
body would normally handle without an individual even realizing a
battle had taken place. Doctors response to the "overactive immune
response" is to suppress the immune system. This simply aggravates
the problem and doesn’t address the cause. The better way to respond
to the immune system’s cry for help in fighting the toxic environment
is to feed the immune system those nutrients to which it is deficient.
The essential fatty acids and vitamin E addresses the skin and cells
moisture levels. The moisture barrier of the skin serves as
protection against irritants and also promotes healthy skin cell
regeneration. The vitamin C is a natural antihistamine which
regulates histamine release in a healthy manner without promoting the
harmful side effects as those created by steroid and other eczema
medications. Fiber promotes healthy digestive flow and helps in
ridding the body of the candida that promotes eczema flareups.
I’ve just given a brief description of the benefits of some of the
nutrients mentioned to provide you with understanding as to why they
benefit. This basic information is something that each
dermatologist/physician should discuss with their eczema patients.
It’s not that the body needs to be medicated; but rather, that it
needs to be fed the nutrients for which it is deficient. The
wholehealthmd.com website provides a detailed nutritional list for
eczema sufferers that you can use as an informational guide to
a "healthier eating" lifestyle.
Because the skin is an external organ, you will need to address its
external skin care needs. Clean skin is imperative to healthy skin.
Finding organic/natural skin care that works with your skin type is
essential. For me Weleda Skin Food has been very helpful. Here are
some other lines for you to consider: Aubrey Organics, Avalon
Organics, Jason Naturals, and Nature’s Gate. You can find all of the
products at your local Whole Foods store. If you don’t have a Whole
Foods in your area, then your local health food store is equally
sufficient.
