What is Seborrhea?

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

A friend of mine wrote this post that focuses on the root of the
problem. Not a band aid treatment. This is basically how I treated
myself. I did add a few things like fish oil etc. You don’t need
to buy the specific supplements listed here…there are other
options as well. Some people in here might need addtionial steps to
treat themselves. That is why it is important to ask questions. If
you have any questions post and I’ll try to answer.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema where the oil glands of
the skin are affected. In skin, there are two types of glands: sweat
glands and oil glands. The sweat glands release sweat as a
temperature regulator for the body, and also releases toxic waste.
The oil glands, which open up into the hair follicles, produces an

Psoriasis gene ID’d by Israeli researchers

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Jun. 14 - A new gene associated with a variant of psoriasis and
seborrheic dermatitis has been identified by a research group led by
Dr. Ohad Birk at the Morris Kahn Laboratory of Human Genetics at Ben
Gurion University and Soroka Medical Center. The gene discovered by
the Israeli researchers is of much interest as it allows the first
major molecular insight into why the specific skin cells proliferate
excessively, causing these two common skin diseases. Psoriasis and
seborrheic dermatitis affect 2-3% of the population worldwide and 85%
of AIDS patients. Both skin diseases are caused by excessive
proliferation of specific cells (keratinocytes) in the skin. To date,
there is only very limited understanding as to the molecular
mechanisms causing these two common disorders. The two-and-a-half-year
study examined an Israeli Moroccan Jewish family with 44 members over
five generations who showed signs characteristic of psoriasis and
seborrheic dermatitis. By using advanced techniques to analyze DNA

Biotin

Has anyone looked into biotin deficiency as a cause?

This sounds more promising than anything else I’ve read about seb.
derm. I’ve just started taking 5mg of biotin a day, along with a B-
complex and extra B5 (as is sometimes recommended for acne).

Heyla all. I’ve had seborrheic dermatitis for about 15 years, or since my late
teens. It started
in my eyebrows (very thick, unfortunately) and from there spread to my scalp,
nose, chin,
lower abdomen, and groin. It has waxed and waned, of course, with some areas
like my
eyebrows and lower abdomen no longer exhibiting any symptoms at all.

I’ve never talked to a doctor about my condition, since I’ve developed my own
treatment
regimen through trial and error. For my scalp I use Head & Shoulders Intensive
Care. For
everything else, I wash twice a day with aloe vera-based soap. I also take a
daily multivitamin
and fish oil supplement.
