Help - Sub Derm Long Term Newbe???
I have had the heavy dose of red inflamed face then skin shedding for
many years. I’ve gone through the differing 1%-2% Cort. cream drill
only to have become addicted and had to go cold turkey last spring. I
then tried laser, which after four $200/pop treatments it was pretty
evident that did not work. The redness is a pain, but the skin
shedding (mainly face - nose eyebrows, shaving areas)is beyond a mere
hassle. I’ve lost faith in the Derms as they always refer back to the
Czone creams and merely put me back on the cycle.
I recognize the need for a treatment for the redness as well as the
shedding, but really want to get the amost daily shedding under
control. I used Cetaphil cream but it only masks the problem.
I’ve decided to start searching for help elsewhere, which is how I
arrived here. I’ve been surfing this group and have not really found
anything specifically tied to shedding. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

Hi!
Redness and excessive scaling is Seborrheic Dermatitis. As your well
aware, this skin disorder is treatable but may recur, requiring re-
treatment.
Here are my current recommendations…
Nonprescription shampoos containing tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium
sulfide, sulfur and/or salicylic acid.
Every other day, I use P&S Shampoo for my hair, eyebrows, mustache,
middle of my chest, on my face, behind and inside my ears. It’s a
Seborrheic Dermatitis and Psoriasis Shampoo and can be purchased at
www.DERMAdoctor.com
For a great Cleansing Conditioner for the hair, try WEN tea tree by
Chaz Dean. His website is located at:
www.chazdeanstudio.com
If you have Sensitive Skin, Try Calming Body Wash by Bath & Body
Works in their PURE SIMPLICITY product line.
Twice daily, I wash my face using a non fragrant face wash and
warm water and my hands. I just started using a sensitive skin
calming self-foaming face wash, by Bath & Body Works. It’s a
fragrant free SOY product in their PURE SIMPLICITY product line, but
I found the product best for shaving.
My recommendation is Rosemary Facial Wash by Renna Naturals out of
Burbank, California. Her products are Fragrance Free and Free of
harmful chemicals. The Natural Shop’s website is located at:
www.The-Natural-Shop.com
After a face wash and shower, I add Vanicream lite lotion (or cream)
to my face, hands and body, followed by a touch of Protopic if
needed. I only use Protopic when redness shows up. Vanicream is free
of dyes and fragrance and is also available at:
www.DERMAdoctor.com
If you do not use Protopic, you might want to try TEASE zone,
PICTURE porefect, and calm cool & CORRECTED, by DERMAdoctor and just
follow the directions for each product.
The trick to keep scaling under control is constant moisturizing. If
you go out into the sun, I recommend Vanicream Sunscreen SPF 35.
It’s also available at DERMAdoctor, and you can also read more about
Vanicream products by going to: www.psico.com
I pray you find all this information helpful.

Hi,
I am surprised your doctors have not prescribed Elidel at least in
stead of corticosteroids.
I would not suggest using too mmany products on your face. It will most
likely just irritate your face. The skin was not designed for this.
I never had any help from cleansers and the like. But maybe I just
didnt use them long enough or use the right ones.
I like the recommendation of Calm Cool and Corrected from dermadoctor.
It is a very good topical. The picture poreperfect I think contains
azelaic acid and might just be too harsh. The picture pore perfect I
think is more for just large pores and seborrheic type skin without the
inflation associated with dermatitis.
The DRL sensitive skin or extra strength version from Cutanix is
another great topical anti-inflammatory lotion.
A good diet I find is important in seb derm. Diet affects the oilyness
of the skin and also the inflammation in the body. I notice sugar,
trans fats, saturated fats, dairy (dairy fat) and processed foods in
general are not good.
You coul also try the Ovace products. These are specifically designes
for seb derm, but they are prescription topicals and only available in
the US. I never tried them.
best wishes

I just had the good fortune to get to try a sample of CCC and it
worked for me, the few days it lasted. I was also very impressed by
the Tease Zone Gel, it really did work. I’ve never trusted those kinds
of oil thingies, but this could be worth checking out.
Since these two Dermadoctor products was really good, I’m a bit
curious about the Picture porefect, could you or anyone else who have
used it tell me something about it?
Thanks

Andreas, I dont think this is a product that should be put on
rosacea/seb derm skin (read: sensitive skin)
It contains both azelaic acid and retinol, which can be harsh on the
skin. The Rosacea-product Finacea coctains azelaic acid, and I found it
very harsh on the skin.
All in all, I dont think picture pore perfect is meant for inflamed and
very sensitive skin.

I disagree Mads. I have very sensitive skin and use PCITURE porefect.
DERMAdoctor designed it to help pores appear smaller while removing
excess skin oils. It also crops out blackheads and smoothes out edges.
It works for me!

Hey Dan!
Sounds good, Dan! But I’m still not sure my skin would tolerate it.
It’s a shame DERMAdoctor doesn’t sell samples, like Lindy Sy. I ain’t
that rich (yet) to be able to spend hundreds of dollars on stuff I
don’t know is something that will work for me.
Anyway, looks like DERMAdocotor has quite a few really good products here!

I had horrible shedding about 2 months ago, particularly around the
nose, ears (in and behind) and also the eyebrows. What I have found
that has worked extremely well for me is jojoba oil. You put it on
before you go to work and it will look fairly oily but it dries fairly
quickly and the flakes are not evident. They’ll start showing up in
the late afternoon/evening. I put a little on before bed as well.
Keep in mind, do not put it on excessively. A little goes along way.
You can find it at the organic stores like Trader Joes or Jimbos
(Naturally), perhaps even Henry’s market. They usually have two
kinds. A clear and a golden. If you have a darker complexion (like
myself - half caucasian, half filipino) go with golden, if not, then
the clear is your choice.
I’ve been ovace gel for a week. Too early to report back other than
to say it has not made it worse, slight improvement so far.

Also wanted to modify. It looks oily going on but
does not APPEAR oily after it dries (Jojoba oil)
(pronounced ha-hoba)

Hi Andreas!
DERMAdoctor calm cool & CORRECTED (ccC) IS very EXPENSIVE,
considering it’s $85US per 1.7 oz. I do not think you really need it
unless you also have rosacea. DERMAdoctor’s ccC helps reduce
inflammation, improves blemishes, minimizes bacteria producion on
the skin, blances moisture and rejuvenates skin. I was given a
sample envelope with one of my orders. A pea size bead is all you
need if you decide to purchase the product.
This morning I washed my face, shaved, pat my face dry and
immedially put a dimes worth of DERMAdoctor’s body GUARD (spf 30)
and a pea size of Protopic on my complete face. After a few minutes,
I added a short burst (the size of a pea) onto my finger tips of
DERMAdoctor’s TEASE zone.
This evening, I washed my face and put a dimes worth of Vanicream
skin cream and a pea size of Protopic on my face. A few minutes
later, I added a pea size squrt of DERMAdoctor PICTURE porefect.
Tomorrow moring the only difference will be the addition of the
seborrheic dermatitis shampoo I prefer to use.
Stay away from ALL products that have a fragrance. ONLY use fragrant
free products on sensitive skin.
