photodynamic therapy for acne/oily skin
Photodynamic treatment for acne
• One to three treatments improve the skin condition for several
months
• Each treatment lasts approximately one hour
• Faster results than conventional treatments
• Improves acne scars, dilated pores, oily skin, skin tone and
general appearance
• May be used alone or in combination with conventional
treatments
• It is currently the simplest and most elegant treatment with
the maximum benefits for a minimum of side effects and recuperation
time !
• Treatments may also be given to patients with dark skin or
tanning, and during any time of the year.
• Effective alternative for patients who had poor response to
conventional acne treatments or too many side effects to complete
those treatments.
• 2-4 days of recuperation are usually necessary
In theory, it would be possible to control acne with 1-3 hours a
year of treatment in a medical clinic, without using irritating
topical prescriptions, or ingesting systemic medications or birth
control pills !
It is a major advance in dermatologic therapy!
Description: A photosensitizing medication ( which makes the skin
sensitive to light ), is applied at the clinic for one hour. It is
then activated by a light source ( Laser and/or blue light )
The activated medication produces free oxygen radicals that cause
partial damage to sebaceous glands, shrinking them and reducing
their oil production. This beneficial effect is similar to the
effect of accutane on acne.
Side effects are similar to a strong sunburn ( except this
treatment is not cancer causing ). It is necessary to stay indoors
for 48 hours after treatment.
Treatments are usually done on Friday, you stay indoors during the
weekend and go back to school or work on Monday.
This treatment is used in major American centers specialized in
laser and dermatologic surgery.
The Montreal Institute for Skin Laser Surgery directed by DR Denis
Hebert is the first specialized center in Quebec to offer this avant-
garde treatment.
