Chemical irritaion + seb derm
Take a look at this abstract. Seems to confirm what I’ve learned
through trial and error with my SD. Skin all over my body is
hypersenstive, not just the SD affected areas. I just had an itchy
low level dermatitis as a result of changing laundry detergents.
Washed my clothes in just water several times to remove the residue.
The condition cleared up in a week. I’m just washing SD area with
cool water.

A dose-response study of irritant reactions to sodium lauryl sulphate
in patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis and atopic eczema.

Department of Dermatology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon
Tyne, UK.
The susceptibility of the skin of patients with seborrhoeic
dermatitis to surfactant irritation was investigated and compared to
that of a group of normal subjects and patients with a history of
atopic eczema. Responses to six concentrations of sodium lauryl
sulphate (SLS), applied to forearm skin, were assessed clinically and
measured by laser Doppler flowmetry. Analysis of dose-response curves
showed statistically significant increased susceptibility to SLS-
induced irritation in patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis and atopic
eczema compared with normal subjects. Increased susceptibility to
chemical irritation may be important in the pathogenesis of
seborrhoeic dermatitis.

I can’t use anything with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or Sodium
Laureth Sulphate (Sodium Lauryl ether Sulphate) in it’s
ingredients. Apart from toothpaste.
I would suggest that everyone with sebderm/dermatitis checks
their shampoo, facewash etc and see if they contain SLS. If
so, try using some without SLS and see if it makes a
difference, particularly if you have problems with dry itchy
skin/scalp after washing.
Shampoos/facewashes are very difficult to find without SLS,
but they do exist. I use Neutrogena Clear Pore Cream Wash
and Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo (the one without coal tar -
check the ingredients for SLS as some T/Gel shampoos do
contain it).
