What works for you? And other questions

My name is Laurie. I’m new to this list but not new
to seborrheic dermatitis. I’m 45, and have had it since
age 20, off and on. Right now it is "on" and I could use
some assistance.

I would like to know what works best for people? In
particular I am looking for a long term shampoo I can
use frequently over a long period of time and not cause
harm to my health, since this is a long term condition:
i.e. although I find my skin improves with hydrocortisone
cream I know this is a strong medicine and can be powerful.

I have a few other questions:

Is it okay to shampoo every day with a medicated

dandruff shampoo? I would rate my hair as normal:
not overly dry or overly oily, and find that I don’t need
a conditioner when I wash less often than daily, but do need
one when I shampoo daily. My scalp feels always dry, not
oily.

Is it okay to alternate different dandruff shampoos?

Is it okay to alternate a medicated shampoo with a regular shampoo,
and what regular (non dandruff) shampoo is best? One for dry
skin/hair?

Is there some kind of lotion that can be applied to stay in the skin
(rather than like shampoo washed off) that does NOT make
the hair greasy, and that is not as strong as cortisone/steroids?

How long should I try a medicated shampoo (i.e. how many
weeks/months) before determining whether it works for me?
And what would be a recommended schedule? (i.e. so and so times
a week for such and such, then…) the shampoos do not seem
to state how often to use them, and if there is an "overdose"/
if I am making my condition better or worse by usign them
frequently.

Finally, have people found that their condition could be
caused by allergy/sensitivity to something in environment
or diet and if so how have they found out to determine
and eliminate this?

I read something about something called Nizoral, but also read
that it is "anti androgenic". Doesnt’this mean it has hormones/
affects the hormones? I am perimenopausal, and have enough
issues with hormones without using a shampooo that affects them.
I am looking for something that doesn’t have a lot of impact
on the rest of my body.

If you have had periods when this has gone away for a while,
what seems to be the pattern? I am starting to suspect I may
be allergic/sensitive to citrus such as orange juice, but
am not totally sure of that.

Thanks a lot, sorry for all the questions.

If I can’t manage to control this myself I’m going to s
a dermatologist, but I’d rather try on my own first.

Laurie
