I took a B-complex vitamin for a couple of days, but
it made me really sick to my stomach, so I had to stop
before I could really give it a chance to work

Hi,
I’ve been doing some reading about the use of Vitamin B5 to reduce
oiliness. Apparently, many people who have acne use it for this
purpose. I was advised by a seb derm list member to give it a try and
I think I will. Has anyone else tried it? With what results?

Tim,
I did try this about a year or so ago–you have to take a boatlaod of this
stuff every day for it to be effective, like up to 10 grams a day. I was
taking 3 1000mg pills 3 times a day, it was not easy popping this many
pills. The major side effect for me was that it made me hungry all the
time.
Did it for about 3 months and saw no major improvements in seb derm–but, it
does not work for everyone and maybe i fall into that category. i have
read that some people on the acne boards swear by this stuff though for acne
though

I tried this last year. The supplement I took (mine
was twice a day) was actually a whole B spectrum, not
just B5. I didn’t notice any improvement, and I ended
up having to stop taking them because they are very
stomach-irritating, even with food. A little while
after I took each pill, I would get queasy. I gave up
after about a week since I couldn’t take the nausea.
My stomach is a little sensitive, though, so maybe
others will have better luck.

Hi,
I haven’t written in a while, but I did want to report the good
results that I’m having with Vitamin B-5. I started taking 5000mg of
B5 in early July then I bumped it up to 10000mg in early August.
Since August, it has been the only thing I’ve taken for my seb derm,
no topicals - for the first time in about 7 years. My major seb derm
symptom was facial oiliness and for the last few weeks it has been
reduced by about 75%. Plus, my face is considerably less red overall.
This summer my seb derm was as bad as it had ever been and nothing
(Nizoral, Head and Shoulders, Desowen, Klaron, Loprox, etc.) was
working for me anymore. I’ve also made some dietary changes (no
wheat, dairy, sugar or alcohol), but I think the improvement has come
mainly from the B5. My only side-effects have been occasional
diarrhea and a few more small pimples/whiteheads. This is the site I
order them from, but I’m sure you can get it at any vitamin store.
The site recommends lowering the dosage after a couple of months and
I plan to do that eventually. If you haven’t tried it yet, I do
recommend giving it a shot, especially if your major symptom is
oiliness. I was very skeptical, but I figured it was worth a try. I
don’t know how long it will last. Because it’s an internal remedy, I
hope it will last longer than the topicals, but who knows. Even if it
does lose effectiveness, at least it has given me a break from the
topicals.
Anyway, that’s my news. Feel free to ask me questions about it.
We’re coming up on the 2-year anniversary of this group. Thanks to
everyone for your contributions.

Tim!
THis is very significant that you are getting these results! Since
you have removed those foods from your diet, would you try removing
all gluten containing foods since it is the gluten in wheat and other
grains that usually produces an allergic response. You can obtain
more information at www.celiac.com. I have not been disciplined
enough to test this out fully. But I have tried…
This is a great time for you to test this out and maybe obtain
complete remission of the symptoms if it turns out to be a food
allergy.
