Accutane
Hi,
Believe me, I hate this problem as much as anyone and I’m willing to
try just about anything, but I would be very careful about using
Accutane. I don’t know much about it, but I’ve heard that it is very
powerful and can sometimes have negative and unintended effects. I
would research it thoroughly, then get the opinions of several
dermatologists before going ahead. I would just hate to see it make
your problem worse.
Good luck whatever you decide,
Tim

I totally agree with you, Tim. But, I feel like I’ve comed to the end
of the line, I need to do something drastic, and I know it will do
what it’s supposed to do. Side effects; I’ve read a great deal about
Accutane on the net, and from what I’ve gathered it’s just a very
small percent of the users who get’s to experience any of the really
bad side effects, almost everyone get’s really dry lips but what’s
that compared to bad seb derm? I’ve also read that acne, which is
what this drug is mainly for, can get worse in the first few weeks. I
will, of course, discuss this with the dermatologist I go to before
doing anything.

Remember me going on about Accutane? Well, I got an appointment in
two weeks, on the 24th to be exact, with an dermatologist, and I’ll
ask for a low dose of Accutane, for both my seb derm and mild acne.
I’ll keep you all posted on the progess once (if) I get started!

As some of you might remember, I took Accutane twice a day for the
first six weeks, then only for one week per month. But it has become
appearent that this is not enough to keep my oil production under
control, so I decided, togehter with my derm, to step up the
treatment to normal dosage - full steam ahead with 20 mg twice a day
at least for a few months.

Hello all-
I have seb derm as well as rosacea and my derm has put me on low dose
accutane at my request.
Has anyone else given this a try? This first week has been pretty miserable.
Thanks for any input!

Hi,
I have only read and heard others claim that a low dose accutane
regimen is good for seb derm. I went through a normal accutane
course, and it cut down oil at least during the course, but oil came
back. The acne I had disppeared more permanently though.
But accutane has an anti inflammatory effect as well as a sebum
reducing effect, so at least for your sem derm it should be good.
I dont know a lot about rosacea, but I do know that Dr Nase
(www.drnase.com) recommends accutane for rosacea.
But do you use any moisturiser now that you are on accutane?
If not, maybe it would be a good idea to check out either the oily
skin version DRL from Cutanix or the sensitive skin version. If you
have not tried them already. A pure aloe vera gel might also be good.
Good luck.

I’ve been on two courses…the second one being a lower dose regimen.
This was for acne though. It worked pretty well for all that and I’m
sure it would work for the seb derm (at least for me). My only
concern is that I’ve been on it twice and wonder how good of an idea
it would be to be on it a third time.
How is it miserable…the accutane?

ACCUTANE does more harm than good. Your condition may show a temporary
relief but later on you will be in a worse condition. I was on accutane for
6 months because of a bad acne condtion, my new doctor said it basically
overloaded and poisoned my liver, may be the reason why I have seb derm now.

That’s not at all my experience. I’d still have cystic acne if I
didn’t take it and my liver is just fine. Having said that, it IS a
powerful drug and needs to be taken under observation and blood tests
need to be done while on it to determine if indeed it is causing
problems. Did you use it under supervision and how did your new
doctor assess that your liver is overloaded and poisoned? Were you
taking the high dose form? and was this for seb derm or for something
else?

hi,
I agree. What is the proof that accutane overloaded your liver?
My liver readings were perfectly normal on accutane.
Binge drinking in the weekends or smoking a joint now and then is a
stress on your liver too, but its not like it will give you
seborrheic dermatitis.
But who knows. Maybe your dermatologist knew that your liver test
results had been very poor and that the accutane was a big stress on
your liver, if that was the case, why didnt he/she end the course?

I think he has me on too high a dose, my entire face has been so red and
inflamed that I have to use ice packs. I am going to drop the dose way down.
It has definitely dried me out big time for the seb derm, but I am pretty
sure it is making the rosacea worse. Can’t fix one without screwing up the
other!
But thanks for replying..

When i was on a lower dose of accutane, I had constant nose bleeds, and my
whole body and face went completely dry and flaky. There are warning signs
on the accutane label that it causes abnormal birth defects, and the patient
must be on constant "blood work" supervision. If it causes birth defets,
and the patient must always be on blood work supervision, what benefit can
one get from accutane?

I had really oily skin and Accutane shrunk my pores to "normal"
(invisible) size, and of course reduced the oil by 90-95%, and made
my seb derm virtually disappear. Togehter with DRL, it’s the best
weapon I’ve tried against seb derm so far. Sure, nosebleeds sometimes
and some other crap, but it gradually almost disappeared. Having a
nosebleed every other day is nothing compared to how my skin looked
and the massive self confidence boost I got!

Yes you are right
The accutane only exagerated my over stressed liver. Blood tests were taken
for toxicology reports, and mine was toxic.

If you are on the low dose already, how will you drop it down? Or do
you mean just use it less frequently? I don’t know the answer.
Accutane is really for cystic acne. It may work for some people on
the other things (rosacea and seb derm), but that may not be the case
for everyone. When I was on it I think I may have had some redness,
but not enough for me to use ice packs. My skin was very dry though.
This didn’t bother me as the acne was definitely going down.
Accutane doesn’t work for everyone, so I’m not sure what to tell you.
I will tell you though, that while on it, my skin wasn’t the best,
but once off it my skin was quite good for a few years.

The birth defects are caused when a mother uses it while pregnant.
That’s why they generally don’t prescribe to women.
The skin does become dry and flaky while on it. That’s a side effect
while you are on it. That doesn’t mean it’s not working. You are,
after all, trying to reduce oil. For many, dry skin is far better
than the alternative. That is the benefit. Having the blood tested
is not a bad price to pay if it is working. It sure as hell worked
for me on the cystic acne.
