Update

Monday, March 31st, 2003

Hello all,
I stopped Nizoral a couple of weeks ago because it was starting to
lose effectiveness after 5 months of being pretty good. Now I’ve
switched to selenium sulfide, which has worked very well for me in
the past. First I tried the 1% strength in the Head and Shoulders
Intensive Treatment shampoo on my face. That didn’t seem to make much
of a difference, so this week I upgraded to 2.5% strength which is
found in Exsel shampoo. I haven’t seen much improvement and it is
very drying. I’m having to use a lot of moisturizer. I use Purpose,
and it seems okay. It’s a hard time for me because as much as I try
to be hopeful about the selenium sulfide and patient for it to start
working, I fall back into the routine of worrying that it won’t work,
that it’ll just get worse, etc. Very depressing stuff. So, I’m
thinking I’ll give the selenium sulfide another couple of weeks then
maybe try Protopic. I guess I haven’t tried it yet because it’s so

Is it SD, or rosecea, or both ?

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

Hi,
I wrote on the rosecea site a few days ago, saying that I HAVE a
certain disease to my skin (as diagnosed by dermatologists). I have
since spent many hours reading the message board, and now realise
that I should be ASKING if people recognise what I have, not telling
them what I (think I) have. So, can you help from your experience,
these are my symptoms/history:

1. Clear skin to age 13, now age 37.
2. Since 13 have had:- red flush effect (and varyable itching) to my
front cheeks either side of nose; reddish nose; some limited redness
to my forehead; scaly scalp but not much; upper body trunk has
limited red flushing/scaly effect, very variable. All of this varies
day-to-day for no apparent reason.
3. Tried many treatments over the years including oral antibiotics,

Who has tried Elidel?

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

If anyone of you have tried the new "elidel" please let me and others
know the result.
How does it work? What´s your opinion?
I wish I could buy it and see the result myself but it’s only
available in the US.

Seb Derm + food?

Saturday, March 29th, 2003

Hey, I am brand new to this group, so I apologize if this has been
answered in the archives..

I have a rash around my mouth. It basically has two components… One
is these kind of reddish/purplish blotches on my upper lip… They are
sometimes dry, sometimes sore.. never itch. They are basically
underneath the skin.. They look almost like Exzema.. They seem to get
darker when exposed to certain foods (not sure what those foods are
yet) but overall the flares come and go, and always stay w/in a
certain range of severity..

The second component is these bumps that appear around the mouth that
look similar to acne. The main difference between them and acne is
that 18-20 of them often appear w/in 15-20 minutes, and they never get
worse if I haven’t eaten anything that day.. They appear to be almost

hello everyone

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

I am new in this group and I also have the same problem, seb derm.
It’s not easy to treat and doesn’t make you happy.
I am so glad to find this group and to meet all of you here.

Please, tell me if it’s still possible to get protopic from
usamedicine.com or if it’s to find somewhere else.

Thank you and all my greetings to you all. Tina

DOING GOOD/THANK YOU

Friday, March 21st, 2003

I just thought I would share how helpful you all have been. I have both
rosacea and seb derm. I have been able to keep one or the other under
control, but never both, till now. No miracles here, but I am back to that
sun kissed look instead of the rare tenderized steak look, my face is pretty
much flake free, and my swelling is way down. My nose looks normal! I have
been using the Body Shop’s tea tree glycerin soap ($5) in the evenings and
following it with Queen Helena’s Mint Julep Mask ($3) and then a very high
quality jojoba oil form bostonjojoba.com (31.71 w/s&h for 32 oz, I have used
it for a month on my face and nails and have used maybe an oz). My face has
settled down so beautifully. I am using no topicals at all. I am using
doxycycline once a day (my eye get too bad w/o it) as well as primrose oil
(15? for 30/1200 mg), borage seed oil (17.99 for 50/1000mg), non flushing b
complex (11.09 30/2 per day) and ACES(20.05 for 90/2 per day) and allegra,
although not necessarily for my face. I have been using Nizoral AD shampoo
for my hair, scrubbing very hard and leaving it on for several minutes

New to group

Wednesday, March 19th, 2003

I’m new to the group. I spent all last night reading through all 190
some-odd posts. I was diagnosed with rosacea — probably steriod
induced — two years ago and have controlled it primarily with a low-
carb diet. No sugar, no flour, no pasta, potatoes or rice and
absolutely no alcohol. I think I have probably had sebderm the whole
time, the reason for which I was using steriods and this diet seemed
to control the sebderm symptoms until recently. It’s always worst in
the winter. I have sebderm all across my forehead, bilaterally under
each eye, a spot on each side of my nose, and another small spot on
each side of my mouth.

My primary care physician prescribed a topical antifungal last week –
which I’ve not heard anyone in this group discuss — to which I had a
terrible reaction. There is a rosacea book available by a Dr.
Geoffrey Nase that discusses how sebderm frequently occurring in

Has anyone here used Proactiv?
I’d like to hear from anyone who has used this product.
Any comments (pro or con) will be much appreciated.
Thanks.
