Howdy, gang!
I just receieved Protopic in the mail today. How appropriate - I just
got a flare-up. I’ll let you know how it goes when I’ve used it about
a week or so.
I have been starting to wonder if some of us that have been diagnosed
with seb derm particularly with areas around the lips and nose may
actually have perioral dermatitis.
Seems like I have two separate things going on around and above the
lip area. I truly believe that last year I had seb derm, but
occasionally I have this breakout above my lip that is basically red,
tight (dry feeling), and bubbly (bubbly is a big part of this).
After looking into perioral dermatitis, I’ve realized that this
current breakout started after using a new Tartar control toothpaste
and a mint, whitening floss. So, I stopped using both and things
seem to be clearing up.
But, this really got me thinking that for those people that
supposedly have seb derm above the lip and below the nose or around

I’m still using Protopic and still happy; however, the approach of
the cold season and the year anniversary of my first flares with
rosacea and sebderm has got me tense. Guess we will see if Protopic
and Metrocream can get me through another winter.
For those of you that have seb derm of the scalp, my boyfriend has it
and was given a rx for Capex shampoo. He has been using it for a few
weeks and he thinks it is really great. It has really cut down on
his itching and flaking. He also has seb derm of the eyelids, but he
hasn’t bothered to treat it. He basically cannot imagine putting the
time, money and energy that I have put into attempting to make my
face appear "normal." Ah — to be a carefree person like him. I
wonder what it would really be like to not give a damn about your
appearance or what people think. Now, someone should bottled that
attitude and sell it.

This info comes from the Protopic manufacturer’s site:
Protopic is a different kind of topical prescription medication for
treating eczema. It’s the first in a new class of therapy known as
TIMs, or topical immunomodulators. Protopic is not a steroid, and it
won’t cause thinning of the skin.
Protopic Ointment can be used for patients with moderate to severe
eczema who do not respond well to or who may have side effects with
traditional treatments. It can be used for short or repeated periods
of treatment. Protopic is prescribed for adults in concentrations of
0.03% and 0.1% and for children, aged 2 to 15 years, in the 0.03%
concentration only.
While the exact action in eczema is unknown, Protopic treats your

Another post from the rosacea list:
Dr. Linda Sy shared this news on Protopic on her website. Anyone have
experience with Protopic? If so, let us know what you think.
Thanks!
At the 43rd annual meeting of the Noah Worcester Dermatological
Society, Mark Lebwohl, M.D., chairman of the department of
dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine presented his findings
on the effectiveness of topical tacrolimus (Protopic Ointment) in
treating atopic dermatitis. Tacrolimus is the first in a generation
of nonsteroidal topical immunomodulators. According to Dr. Lebwohl,
tacrolimus might be useful in other conditions, such as seborrheic
dermatitis, eyelid dermatitis, and pyoderma gangrenosum. "One of the
nice things about this new topical immunomodulator is that it does
not have any of the corticosteroid problems that we’re used to. You
don’t have to worry about cutaneous atrophy, formation of stria, and

I belive it was someone in this group who recommended Protopic for
treating seb derm. It is now available at usamedicine.com for those
who are interested. I’m thinking of ordering. Anyone who knows a bit
more about it?
I’ve heard there is a new product available to treat seb derm. The
product, in some way, is related to protein. Do you have any inf on this?

Hi, I am over from the rosacea support board, but since my seb derm
comes and goes more than the rosacea I thought I would sign on here
as well.
I am a post menopausal woman that had perfect skin untill 4 years ago
when menopause really hit full force. First came little flat red
spots about the size of the end of a Q-Tip, these din’t itch, burn or
raise up at all. They would be there for several days and then just
disappear only to return in about 2 weeks. They were only on my nose,
looked awful and lasted about a year. Then the large pustules and
papules started on my nose and chin. My face would get red and stay
that way for a few days. About the same time, the patches of sebderm
started on my nose, eyebrows and around my hair line.
I showed all of the stages to my regular doctor and all he said was "
hormone related " so a year ago during a really bad outbreak of all I
finally got in to see a dermatologist and was diagnosed with sebderm,

Selsen Blue has a lot of conditioner so it keeps my face and scalp
moisturized. I don’t use an extra conditioner after I shampoo. I
still use lotion (Aderma) on my face. It hides the flakes for a
little while. I wish we had a cure for this. Elaine ![]()
