Protopic
I belive it was someone in this group who recommended Protopic for
treating seb derm. It is now available at usamedicine.com for those
who are interested. I’m thinking of ordering. Anyone who knows a bit
more about it?

I copied this post from the rosacea list. Sounds encouraging.
"I have been using it for about 6 weeks now.
It works better for me than the steroids ever
did. I still do have a little flakiness
occasionally, but it is not really noticeable.
What is nice is that the redness is gone and the
burning. I only use it once a day (only when I
have an eruption)and very sparingly. If I used it
more often I am sure that the flakiness would
probably be gone. I’m just so scared after using
the steroids to use any medication on my face
unless absolutely necessary. I have had no side
effects from the treatment."
January 9th, 2003 at 10:32 am
That’s it, you’ve got me convinced, I just ordered it from
usamedicine.com, I choosed 0.03% to start with.
January 10th, 2003 at 1:17 am
Hi, me again with another endorsement of Protopic. And before you
ask, no I don’t work for the Protopic company. It just sounds like it
could be an effective treatment for seb derm. And that’s why we’re
all here, right?
Tim
From Amy:
Well, I have had excellent results with Protopic. I use it with
Metrocream. I only use Protopic and Metrocream once a day and that
is at night.
For the seb derm, I tried several different things before using
Protopic. All of them were the cortisone type lotions and creams –
nothing worked and most of those made me break out. After Protopic
came out on the market, my doctor told me that there was a new
treatment for eczema and that he wasn’t sure it would do any good
with seb derm, but he gave me samples and sent me home with a pat on
the back.
After one application of the Protopic, I saw an amazing difference in
the seb derm. I have been using it consistently for about a year now
and I’ve had no problems with seb derm.
Also, the Protopic doesn’t seem to irritate my rosacea. I urge
anyone with seb derm to try this stuff.
Hope that helps!

Wow, sounds almost too good to be true. Could this be "it", what
we’ve all been waiting for?
January 10th, 2003 at 7:07 pm
Hi
I have suffered with seb derm for years (I am now 29), and was prescribed the usual hydrocortisone creams for years. However this has now given me steroid rosacea and I have had a couple of photoderm sessions. These in turn aggrivate my seb derm.
I had to completely stop applying my hydro cream which I did, and had a nightmare reaction to stopping straight away but persevered and I am now completely free.
I will continue to have photoderm to see if I can get my skin back to it`s normal colour.
I use Nizoral shampoo for my scalp (also affected), and note that I have to physically scrub my face to rid it of flakes (skin visibly showing signs of flaking), which in turn makes my rosacea worse.
Anyway I see that some of you guys have discovered Protopic and I am willing to give this a go to see if I can reduce my seb derm significantly and maybe get my life back again.
I visited the protopic site and need to order some. Can I get it from my local doctor, because I see usamedicine.com are charging $112 a tube….living in the UK, taking into account shipment charges etc, I find this to be prohibitively expensive.
Your comments would be appreciated.
P.S. Thanks for the start of a great group, at least I know there is hope.

Oh yeah, bigtime! Almost all the redness, that is the main problem
for me, is gone. I’ve just used it for a couple of days now, but it
seems to be working just fine. I just hope it will continue to work
and not, like other creams, be less and less effective as time goes
by. I chose 0.03% so I can "upgrade" to 1% if it’s effectivness
should wear off.

has your stuff arrived on time?/

My Protopic arrived yesterday and so last night was my first application.
It is a little hard to spread as it`s very thick and makes your face shine, but
I`ll let you know how I get on, fingers crossed.

cheers good luck with it.

Hi
I have mild but persistent seb derm - the dry flaky type.
My skin changed two days after starting protopic. (.03%)
It does have a vaseline base but I just put it on at night or under
makeup. NO FLAKES!! And almost no redness - my chronic seb derm
previously induced rosacea.
I am currently using Tolerin cleanser (from advice from rosacea
board).
I don’t have a moisturizer yet. My skin feels so normal I am afraid
to try anything else right now.
I hope there are no long term effects from protopic.

That`s great news..
I have been using it for only a day now and decided to only use it on a small
part of my face just in case it flared up really badly.
So far, so good, it has stopped the flaking so i think i will now move onto the
rest of my face.
Will keep you guys informed.

Just to throw in my information… Been using Protopic almost every single day for just about a year. So, I can say that (so far) I haven’t experienced any negative side-effects with long term use.

Glad to hear that Protopic is working well for people. I’m using it
on a small spot just to see how it goes. Haven’t noticed any change
yet, but I’ve only used it for 2 days. Also glad to hear that Head
and Shoulders Intensive is working for Anders. It worked great for my
face for about 7 months. My derm suggested trying Exsel shampoo which
is 2.5% selenium sulfide compared to 1% for the H and S. Anyone have
any thoughts on this idea?
It’s great that we have more members now. Let’s hear what you’re all
using for sebderm and how it’s going for you. We can’t help eachother
if we don’t write in.

to be honest you cant believe how happy i am for fellow sufferers to be
tempereraly cured (lets hope perminent) cause even if it doesnt work for
others ,for those it does work for ,to feel normal again in public is
priceless and i hope it works for all of us. keep up the info and those
who havent experienced this dont understand the elation in the chance of
being cured.
fingers xx it still works and amys email is a help to see it lasts ,a year
clean of this would be a godsend. still waiting my prescription of
protopic.

yes, the experience of possible cure/ syptom improvement is a wonderful
thing. Every once in a while I take a week or two dose of antibiotics just
to remember there probably is some healthier answer out there…
It’s easy for me to forget my condition could get better, and hopelessness
SUCKS.

im awaiting my order in bahrain. it may take time. 2 1/2 weeks so far and
not got mine yet but i know a few people on the site have said that there
low on stocks or somthing and has taken time before.
February 10th, 2003 at 3:45 am
They didn’t have Protopic at first, but I wrote them and asked if it
was possible for them to get their hands on it, and after just a week
or so it was available.
February 10th, 2003 at 4:03 pm
Just to update you guys on my situation.
I received my Protopic over the weekend, (it took about 3 weeks to arrive), but
it is well worth the wait.
I tried it on a small area first and that improved so I decided to apply it to
the whole of my face, where the seb derm had plagued me for years.
The following morning, I kid you not, it was vastly improved. I just couldn`t
believe it.
As it is quite thick to pply and tends to sit on the skin and looks really shiny
I only apply at night.
Having only used it for a few days my skin is markedly less red and much
smoother.
Of course I am still red in places but this is really down to the rosacea of
which I`m having another photofacial appointment (my 5th), on Friday.
To those that haven`t yet got protopic I would suggest they do so ASAP, mine
cost over £100 and I did that out of desperation, but I`m glad I did.
Will keep you further imformed.

February 24th, 2003 at 2:59 pm
Hi
I have been using Protopic for a few weeks now and was very happy with the results, until now that is.
Well I went out with a few friends and had a few drinks, but noticed my face start to really sting and burn and after a friends comment about my face looking red I made a sharp exit.
I saw that my face has flushed bright red where I had applied the Protopic.
With the onset of Christmas I thought I would go without Protopic for a few days to see how I got on.
As I only wash my face with water I can`t actually remove the Protopic properly from my skin and after washing my face, the area between my eyebrows, down to my my nose burns like hell for about half an hour then dissapates…is this normal??
With the onset of Christmas and the festivities that go with it I`m a little scared if I have just one drink I`m going to look awful..
I`m now back on the Protopic but have a party this Friday and don`t know what to do.
Have others had similar reactions from Protopic and how do you actually remove it from your skin??
Thanks
J
February 26th, 2003 at 9:09 am
Hey J!
I was kind of confused about your post. Why are you trying to wash off the Protopic? And, had you applied Protopic before going out? My regimen with Protopic is only at night and before I go to bed. I wash my face then apply the Protopic. And, yes, I do get red after the application, but this is also before I go to bed so the redness is gone by morning. I do not use it during the day because of the redness and the utter astonishment that anyone could actually apply make-up on top of it.
Take care,
Amy
February 26th, 2003 at 7:18 pm
Another thought:
I have had some luck removing some of the Protopic by just blotting the area with facial tissue. But, I would imagine getting it completely off would be difficult.

I just had a look at www.americanlifestyle.com and they offer
something called Sulfacet, which is supposed to be good against both
seb derm, acne and rosacea. Has anyone tried it?
March 11th, 2003 at 12:56 pm
Heya…
I’m a new member to the group, it’s great to see other people’s
experiences with this thing. I’m in Canada and actually just got a
prescription for Sulfacet from my doctor, as I was looking into
sodium sulfacetemides and they seemed good. However, I haven’t
actually used it yet because I just found out about Protopic on this
thing, and thought I’d try that first. It’s available for
prescription in Canada, which is a good thing because I wouldn’t be
able to afford $100 US for it, yikes. So yeah, it comes tomorrow and
we’ll see how that goes. So, sorry about the Sulfacet thing for now,
but I’ll keep you posted!
By the way, I’ve had Seb Derm for about 3 years and have had a little
success with hydrocortisone creams (particulary one called Valerate),
but am looking for something more effective and also not as harmful.
My skin is also problematic in that it gets very dry as well, so I
want to try to get more moisture in there without causing more
seborrhea to develop. Protopic seems good in this sense because it
has a vaseline base, which might be good for the dryness, who knows.
I’m not sure if anyone else has a dry skin problem too, any feedback
would be much appreciated.

I was looking through and noticed no mention of Novacet lotion, it
has been discontinued (was made by genderm), but this sulfacet seems
to be the new generic alternative or replacement for that.
Pharmaceutical companies only have like 7 years before their formulas
become public domain and anybody can mix it up, something like that.
I have been dealing with this for about 14 or 15 years now,
definitely aggravated by alcohol, cigarettes, and excessive sugar.
Its almost better to have a sunburn because it hides the redness, or
blotchiness. I went to a dermatologist back in february 95 and she
described my case as mild, which is surprising because I was dry,
blotchy, and frankly felt like a freak.
The novacet lotion in combination with the nizoral shampoo, cleared
up things in a couple days, some redness, but HEALTHY even redness,
clearer skin etc. And I was on my way to florida, with very little
money (stress), and drank a case of beer by the pool my first day
there. but I think the novacet was the major factor on the face,
because after a while the shampoo didn’t seem to work too well.
Later lost track of said dermatologist, went to another, who refused
to prescribe novacet, wasn’t interested in why I wanted it (BECAUSE
IT WORKED), and was obviously going to try the "let’s experiment and
have repeated office visits in the search for a "cure", really pissed
me off.
Other things I have used are kiehl’s blue skin conditioner, seems to
clean and seal up pores, but does overdry, and noxema, cleans out the
pores, and takes away some of the blotchy redness.
Some tips: stay away from imported beers, cider, anything with
extensive preservatives, spend a summer at the beach, even if you
have to quit your job to do it, I took up surfing and had no problems
from may until October, then problems when I moved away from the
ocean. Clearasil daily face wash with microscrubbers seems to take
the dead skin away and clear out the pores well, but doesn’t help
with the scalp obviously.
Sorry for the length, just wanted to suggest some alternatives, been
doing as much research as I can when I’m "housebound" and feeling
self concious.

Hi,
I’ve been using Nizoral cream to control my seb derm for the past 5
months or so, but it’s become less effective recently. I will either
switch to selenium sulfide or maybe try Protopic. Can some of the
Protopic users out there let me know how things are going with
Protopic. How often do you use it? Do you use anything else with it?
What kind of results are you getting? Any side effects? Anything you
could tell me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Be sure to reply "on-list" to this, everyone - I want
to know too! I have tried only zinc and salicylic
soaps and coal tar ointment, and they aren’t doing the
trick. I don’t want to do anything with serious or
permanent side effects (I’m sure no one does), and I’d
rather deal with the pain-in-the-butt process of
exfoliating my skin for an hour every day than use a
steroid cream. I want to try the Protopic, but I want
to hear everything that anyone on this list has to say
about it first!
March 25th, 2003 at 6:43 am
Tim:
I have both rosacea and sebderm, both of which have been out of control for
the past two months. I just received a few sample tubes of Protopic from my
dermatologist today. I’m supposed to use it all over my face each night at
bedtime. It’s very much the consistency of vaseline, so it would be
difficult to use it at any other time. I also have Plexion for my rosacea
that I’m to use in the morning. I’ll be happy to keep everyone posted on my
results.
I know there are others that have been using Protopic for quite some time and
I’m sure they will chime in later.

hi. ive used protopic for a few months now and have posted previously.
i was diagnosed s.d years ago and have always used steroid based
creams, ointments aswell as trying any other new fad that came along or
anything my derm asked me to try .all to no avail and the only thing that
kept it somewhat at bay was the steroids, which eventually became my
roscacea problem, which im sure i suffer more from now than i ever did s.d.
saying that the s.d is a chronic disease and is expected to worsen
generally over time than get better so i will never know the answer.
so i decided to stop the steroid creams ,and try protopic. the redness i
would nornmally asscociate with coming off the steroids never happened and
the embarrassment factor wasnt there. initially the protopic did wonders
and i would say nearly got my face back to perfect . then down to me more
than anything(thinking i could be normal again and go out ,drink, eat hi
carbs etc the redness has slowly returned . im not applying protopic on as
much as i first did as it is slighly gluey and very shiny , can only be
applied at nights and even then is still shiny in the morning etc.
im back to my old regime of loads of water off , lots of protopic to see
if i can regain top skin again but seems to be taking longer or maybe the
s.d and roscacea are just working how to overcome protopic like every
other thing weve all tried?? im not sure, its still works asweell as
steroid cream but not aswell as it used to . well thats for me
anyways, others may differ. also i do live in the m/e and they say avoid
the sun with protopic.which is nigh on impossible out here with the
humidity and amount of sun reflection around .
March 26th, 2003 at 1:45 am
Hi, it´s a great help for us all to get news about the results of the
treatments. I’ve tried to cure my sub derm with minerals, vitamins and diet
( homeopatic also told me I had to avoid milk, icecream, orangefruits,
cheese and together with the minerals and vitamines I also got some
homeopatic medicin) He was certain he could cure it.
This was last year and I believed so much in success but it never worked.
Seemed to do at first but finally it came back and I just couldn’t take it
anymore. Now I suddenly also got problems with red eyes and ache in my
stomach.
Back again to steroid-cream and now I am so dissapointed.
Where can I find protopic today online? Please tell me and also let me know
about Elidel, where to buy it if it’s possible.
Would be so very glad to hear how to find protopic.

Tina, I tried B complex vitamins with NO effect…what
has anyone heard about grape juice? I have heard that
is supposed to help, but it just sounds unlikely.
What is the general opinion of drinking tons of water?
Does anyone think this really helps? I am also
curious about whether or not sebderm affects the eye -
not the skin around it, but the actual eye. My eyes
get red and sore a lot and I am wondering if it could
be related.
March 27th, 2003 at 1:46 am
Hi Eurogirl
I have seb der, have had for years and years and the only way to go was the
steroid cream route, which I used for years and year and now have rosacea
too.
I was advised to stop steroid cream altogether which I did but suffered so
much that I started taking it again.
Anyway it got to the point where I had to stop and I had about 2 weeks of
real bad skin, sore as hell (sorry but it`s best if I tell it like it is).
I was just using Aqueous cream but that was useless, along with Nizoral
shampoo for my scalp.
Then I discovered on the internet about IPL treatment to reduce the redness,
I`ve had 6 very expensive treatments and I must say that have really helped,
but the discovery of Protopic has proved the best.
It`s like Vaseline so I only apply at night (when sleeping alone), as it`s
sticky and shiny…Initially it burned real bad but I persevered and it
improved the seb derm a lot and helped to reduce the rosacea redness. Only
trouble is alcohol, the first alcoholic drink I have makes me face burn and
go bright red in the areas that are trouble…this generally subsides after
about half an hour and then it`s fine…i can put up with this.
Sorry if this has been a long e-mail, but i hope it helps to give you a bit
more of an insight.
Keep smiling, you are not alone.

This sounds all to familiar with the steroids–it is is the only thing that
evers works for me but the now the side effects are a rosacea condition with
what seems permanent redness in some spots and thin, sensitive skin with
very large pores.
I am very interested in the success that you had with IPL–did it shrink
your pores at all or eliminate any of the steroid induced rosacea symptons.
Did the proptopic reduce pore size at all if that was a problem you had or
does it make pores look bigger because it so greasy.
Thanks and I am glad that it has helped you.

Hi Sandra, it was really a lot of vitamines and minerales every day I had to
take. morning- dinner- and eveningtime.
I am sure that it’s healthy to drink a lot of water each day but not too
much, not more than 2 litres. It’s good, not only because of the eczema,
it’s always healthy.
I have only noticed the troubles with my eyes when I had the homeopatic
cure. That’s why I stopped and then my eyes were okay again.
I have never tried to eat grapefruit but I have been adviced to not eat
citr.fruits like oranges, lemons and so on.
March 29th, 2003 at 10:57 am
Hi Jason, Thank you, I stop with the steroidcream 4 days ago and use
moisturizer only. Used one with carbamide, from my doctor, but the skin
didn’t like it so I now apply one without carbamide. Feels much better.

Hi,
I have been using Protopic for about a year for a rosacea-like rash and
seb derm on my face. It cleared things up miraculously but now my skin
hurts a LOT, frequently, and the docs can’t explain it. Is anyone else
experiencing this? Any more redness or flushing from using Protopic
than before? When I try to come off it, it hurts worse and my skin
starts to get rough and flakey. I am beginning to be very scared of
this new "miracle drug".
Thanks.

Hi,
Well, I got fed up of waiting for the selenium sulfide to kick in and
start working. I switched to it two weeks ago (first in 1%
concentration, then in 2.5%) and my face has gotten progressively
more red ever since. So, after I washed my face with it last night I
decided to apply protopic. It went on fine and a little bit seemed to
spread pretty evenly. Haven’t noticed much this morning except that
my face seems a little less dry and tight, maybe it’s a little less
red or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. My face does feel a little
warmer today. Anyway, I’m going to try it out for the next few days
and see how it goes. I’ll let you know . . .

About Protopic,
I recieved this pamplet in the mail. they say that the ointment is steroid
free, so at least you know it shouldnt thin your skin. Also, the pamphlet
said it is primarily used for rosacea. It sounds like its working for seb
derm to.

Can anyone tell me if they are still using Protopic to control their seb derm,
to goo effect?
Thanks

September 9th, 2004 at 6:00 am
I use it in my cheek area close to my nose. I don’t have any flaking
there or anything but the derm says it is sd…I feel it may be a
combination of sd/rosacea and it helps with the redness for the most
part. I don’t really like to use it all the time though if I can
help it.

Hi David,
Please tell me what betnovate rd is? Is it a steroid cream and does
it work well for you?. I am also on protopic and so far it seems to
work well and my derm says it does not contain steroid but I use it
sparingly now since my skin has gotten better and this oitnment is
oily.

Hiya mate, I`m still using the Protopic and that`s about all.
I find it helpful, but I do find it hard to rub off and it is very sticky so I
try not to use it too much but still end up having to more than I`d like.
When I try and wash it off the following morning it makes my face burn for a
while.

Adam, thank you so much for the warning! I was afraid
of that! What made you decide to stop using it? Did
it stop working? Wow - I just knew there must be a
downside
I read about that alcohol reaction in the PDR, and I
have definitely felt a warm glow to my skin when I’ve
had a drink already, but it wasn’t a problem for me.
I normally have 1-2 drinks per day, but so far it
seems okay. Of course, I’m a girl and wear makeup, so
it doesn’t seem to make me look red, just feel warm,
and not uncomfortably so. How weird.
September 26th, 2004 at 8:00 am
Again, I’m curious — did it stop working? Is that
why you stopped using it?
May 2nd, 2006 at 11:09 am
I’ve used both Elidel and Protopic. Between the two I’ve preferred
Elidel. As it is a cream, it absorbs quickly. Protopic tends to sit on
the skin, as it’s an ointment. The Elidel has helped with some of the
redness. Has done little to nothing for the flakiness though.
May 6th, 2006 at 6:07 pm
I’ve never used Protopic. I have used Elidel, which is similar and
seemed somewhat helpful. But now I rarely use it because of concern
over the risks that it could lead to cancer (which led to FDA black
box warnings on the box). As I recall, Protopic carries the same type
of warning.
One shampoo brand that I like is Phyto’s Phytosylic shampoo. The
ingredients are all botanically-derived. It is fragrance free. I am
currently alternating it with Phytoneutre, a cream shampoo that helps
to equilibriate the scalp.
To help keep my face under control , I like BWC (Beauty Without
Cruelty) cleanser, which is also all natural. I also use aloe and
Dermadoctor’s Calm, Cool and Corrected.

My feeling about treatments like Protopic is that they only treat the
symptom and not the actual problem, and may actual hinder your attempt
to control the problem.
Don’t get me wrong–if your skin is very sore or itchy, or if you need
to appear in public and need to look decent, I understand that these
things can be helpful.
But… if you’re trying to address the problem underneath, then you
want to be able to see what’s going on, what’s helping, whether your
skin is improving or not. If you’re treating the inflammation at the
same time, you won’t know if the condition is getting better or
whether you’re just suppressing the response. So if yu can, I would do
without stuff like protopic.
I’m really tryng one thing at a time right now, so I can really see
what helps and what doesn’t.
Also, there’s lots of suggestion that steroid creams help in the short
term but actually make SD worse in the long run. That may be true for
protopic as well?
